Saturday, 18 May

The 10th World Water Forum, under the theme ‘Water for Shared Prosperity’, will take play 18-25 May in Bali Indonesia. Heads of state, heads of international organizations, high level government officials, experts, scholars, entrepreneurs and economists from all over the world will share their knowledges, experiences, and practices regarding a wide range of topics related to water.

Monday, 20 May

Today is World Bee Day.

This morning, the Security Council is scheduled to hold a briefing on threats to international peace and security. In the afternoon, it is expected to hold a vote on a draft resolution on non-proliferation.

At noon, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General will hold a press briefing, broadcast live on UN Web TV. This will be followed by a briefing by the Spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly.

At 10 a.m., the 14th Open-ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWG) is scheduled to convene in Conference Room 2 at the UN Headquarters in New York from 20 to 22 May, organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

The Global Transparency Forum is set to take place from 20 to 21 May 2024 at the United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan. The forum will discuss the pivotal role of transparency in climate action as required under the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) of the Paris Agreement. The forum is organised by the Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency - Global Support Programme (CBIT-GSP), with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre (UNEP-CCC), UNDP Climate Promise and it is hosted by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan.

Tuesday, 21 May

Today is International Tea Day, it also World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.

This morning, the Security Council is scheduled to hold an Open Debate on the protection of civilians in armed conflict: 25th Anniversary of SCR 1265 (1999).

At noon, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General will hold a press briefing, broadcast live on UN Web TV. This will be followed by a briefing by the Spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly.     

The guest at the Noon Briefing will be Peggy Walters, International Organization for Migration (IOM) Spokesperson and Director of the Department of Media and Communications. She will brief reporters on IOM's International Dialogue on Migration (IDM).

In Geneva, the UN Information Service will hold its bi-weekly briefing for journalists.

Wednesday, 22 May

Today is International Day for Biological Diversity. “Be part of the Plan” is the theme of International Day for Biological Diversity 2024,  and a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also referred to as the “The Biodiversity Plan.”

In the afternoon, the Security Council is scheduled to go into consultations on 1718 Committee.
At 10:00 a.m., in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, there will be a high-level panel on the theme “Public accessibility and inclusivity: developing strategic initiatives to raise awareness on the role and work of Ombudsman and mediator institutions in the promotion and protection of human rights, good governance and the rule of law”.

As part of the Brussels VIII Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, an online side event will be held at 3:00 PM (Central European Time). The event, titled 'The Situation of Syrian Refugees in Neighbouring Countries: Challenges, Opportunities, and Ways Forward,' will be co-chaired by Ruvendrini Menikdiwela, UNHCR and Saleh Turhan, UNDP. Organized by the 3RP Joint Secretariat in cooperation with the Syria INGO Regional Forum (SIRF), the side event will critically examine how to preserve the hard-won gains of the past 13 years and enhance the protection environment and socio-economic inclusion of Syrian refugees in host countries. It will also make recommendations for the future of the Syrian refugee response. To register, click here.

Thursday, 23 May

Today is Vesak Day, and it is also the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula.

This morning, the Security Council is scheduled to hold an Open Debate on maintenance of international peace and security: Strengthening the role of the African state in addressing global security and development challenges.

At noon, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General will hold a press briefing, broadcast live on UN Web TV. This will be followed by a briefing by the Spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly. 

The guest at the Noon Briefing will be Edem Wosornu, Director of OCHA’s Operations and Advocacy Division. She will brief reporters on her recent visits to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
