Second Session of the Ad Hoc Committee

At its first meeting, 29 July - 9 August,
2002, the Ad Hoc Committee recommended that the Ad Hoc Committee
hold its second session in New York, in May/June 2003.
The General Assembly, in its resolution
57/229 of 18 December 2002, paragraph 3, decided that the
"Ad Hoc Committee should hold…at least one meeting in 2003
of a duration of ten days, prior the fifty-eight session of
the General Assembly." The General Assembly also encourages
"States to hold meetings
or seminars to contribute to the work of the Ad Hoc Committee."
Paragraph 7 of same resolution "invites the regional commissions
and intergovernmental organization, within their respective
mandates, as well as non-governmental organizations, national
disability and human rights institutions, and independent
experts with interests in the matter to make available to the
Ad Hoc Committee suggestions and
possible elements to be considered in the proposals for
a convention."
General Assembly resolution 57/229 urges "that further
efforts be made to ensure the active participation
of non-governmental organizations in the Ad Hoc Committee,
the Division for Social Policy and Development make available
on-line the information note for
NGOs and the pre-registration
form. Online discussions and forums were made available
to facilitate an open and participatory exchange on issues regarding
the elaboration of a new international legal instrument on disability.
