Who We Are:
The Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) is part of the Department of Economic and
Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations Secretariat. The Division seeks to strengthen international cooperation for social development, particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work and the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, persons in situations of conflict and other groups or persons marginalized from society and development.

UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, 19 October 2009. In recognition of the upcoming 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the International Day will focus on the plight of children living in poverty and the need to fulfill their rights in partnership with them and in keeping with the Convention.

A webpage on the Financial and Economic Crisis has been launched by DESA. The Department plays a major convening role to support intergovernmental dialogue and coordinated courses of action to address the challenge.

The Millennium Development Goals Report 2009 was launched in Geneva by the Secretary-General on 6 July. The report, which presents the yearly assessment of global progress towards the MDGs, is prepared by the Statistics Division of DESA on the basis of inputs provided by the members of the Inter-agency and Expert Group on MDG Indicators.
